Mentoring is:
Acting as a coach
Encouraging and modeling reflection and intentionality
Helping the beginning teacher achieve his or her goals
Focusing the beginning teacher on what is important
Connecting the beginning teacher to others who can act as resources
Serving as a sounding board

Criteria for Workshop Participants
· Holds Professional Certificate and has at least 3 years of teaching experience
· Employs best educational practice in classroom
· Committed to collegial practices and experimentation
· Skillful communicator able to adapt to different communication styles

Training Session Objectives
Day One
Participants
will:
u
Have a shared
definition of coaching and mentoring
u
Understand the
needs of beginning teachers
u
Understand the
role of mentor/coach in addressing beginning teachers' needs
u
Enhance
listening and questioning skills to promote reflection
u
Use Maine's
Teaching Standards in coaching
u
Become
familiar with confidentiality guidelines
u
Learn to match
mentoring approaches to beginning teacher needs
Day Two
Participants will:
u
Learn and
practice the coaching cycle
u
Use Maine's
Teaching Standards in mentoring and coaching
u
Enhance
knowledge of classroom observation techniques
u
Increase
awareness of how objective observation data and non-judgmental feedback can
provide a framework for educational decision-making
Who: This training is open to all Maine teachers with at least three years teaching experience.
When and where:
June 25 and 26 OR August 18
and 19, in the Ellsworth District Conference Room,in
the Mill Mall, Ellsworth.
Day #3 will be held in the fall on a date to be determined by participants.
Day 3 (Fall date to be determined)
Enhance listening and questioning skills to promote reflection and effective teaching
Understand the needs of adult learners
Enhance knowledge of teachers’ developmental stages and the phases of mentor relationships
Understand and apply conflict resolution skills
Observe and practice techniques used to plan instruction and assessment
Observe and practice coaching using Maine’s Teaching Standards and Maine’s Learning Results
Time: 8:00 – 3:00 Morning snacks and lunch will be provided
Fee: $100. per person. Checks or Purchase Orders should be made payable to DEEP.
Registration Deadline: Two weeks prior to the training (June 11
and August 4)
(Trainings will be cancelled if fewer than 7 teachers register.)
