University of Maine Center for Science & Mathematics Education Research
and The Jackson Laboratory Sabbatical Research Internship Program
                    at The
Jackson Laboratory

APPLICATION
DEADLINE for Spring 2010:  December 31, 2008

(or until positions are filled – please inquire)

The Jackson Laboratory and the University of Maine, with financial
support from The Howard Hughes Medical Institute and The Bank of America,
Trustee for the Lloyd D. Balfour Foundation, offers a one-semester paid
 research internship for in-service
middle and high school science and mathematics teachers.  Sabbatical
teachers work full-time on a research during the Spring 2010 semester,
under the guidance of a scientist-mentor, earning 3 credits. In addition,
they attend a weekly seminar course
(taught by UMaine faculty at the Jackson Lab) in which they develop
guided inquiry-based curricula and explore pedagogical strategies to help
students learn to think independently. The seminar is also 3 credits,
for a total of 6 graduate credits for
the semester.

Sabbatical Teachers receive a $22,000 stipend for a spring semester
internship lasting from mid January until late May 2010.  Limited
low-priced housing is available for Sabbatical Teachers in a Lab-owned house
near the campus.  Teachers will work
in one of the research labs at The Jackson Laboratory for the entire
semester on a single research project that they and their mentor
scientist identify together.  Teachers will read background literature, write a
 research proposal, learn lab
methods, conduct the research, and summarize and present findings
orally and in a written research paper.  hey will also test in a classroom
the curricular materials they create in the seminar.
All middle or high school science and mathematics teachers in Maine are
 invited to apply.
